How To Be Healthy in Dry Weather

The Curitiba Department of Health urges the population to be careful in very dry weather. They recommend primarily to drink plenty of fluids. Children and the elderly are of greatest concern, as they tend to become dehydrated faster. According to Simepar, (the Meteorological System of Paraná), the relative humidity in Curitiba fell 20 to 30 percent this week. The index provoked an alert status as levels appropriate for human health are greater than 60%.

Dr. Juliane Oliveira, coordinator of Epidemiological Surveillance in the Department of Health, says that dry climate makes it harder to absorb pollutants in the environment and increases the risk of respiratory diseases because it facilitates the entry of viruses and bacteria through drier mucus membranes. Risk of contracting respiratory diseases, headaches, fatigue, and conjunctivitis are greater. “These problems can be prevented by hydrating and also the use of ear and eye drops, especially for children and the elderly who tend to dehydrate more easily,” adds Juliane.

Among other important recommendations: humidify the home environment by filling tubs of water, hanging wet towels, dampening the floor or furniture with wet rags, and using steam or an air purifier. Also, avoid using air conditioning. It is recommended to use skin moisturizer and lip balm, stay in well-ventilated environments if possible, and avoid crowds and moderate or intense physical activities. It is helpful for preventing dry climates not to burn garbage and to keep property grassy or wooded.
