Time to Become a Leader

Known as an effective tool for professional development, coaching has gained increasing credibility and support from around the world. Coaching is an expression commonly used both inside and outside the human resources environment. The problem is that it’s not enough to simply understand it, one must practice it, as the president of the Brazilian Association of Human Resources (ABRH-PR), Sonia Gurgel says, “To be effective, coaching needs to become a daily practice. I always point out that for coaching professionals who are immersed in a process whose main objective is change, behavior is the biggest challenge in this period.”

Sonia also consults and trains leaders of major companies in the market. According to Gurgel, professionals need to focus on the purpose of change in order to gain speed in the process of management, leadership, and skills. The president of ABRH-PR highlights the importance of coaching in helping to make the company manager stand out, become inclusive, successful, and, of course, grow his or her career. ”I always make the analogy with physical fitness coaching. Clients get excited at first but lack the persistence to continue on. Just like in gyms where people end up doing one or two weeks of training, lose interest and eventually stray from the goal,” she says.

In September the School of Higher Education of Paraná, in partnership along with Florida Christian University (FCU), brought to Brazil the International Training and Coaching Certification course. According to the Commercial Supervisor of the Faculty of Higher Education in Paraná, EPHF, Vera Marcia Simões Farias, the course is designed for managers, teachers and students who have already positioned themselves professionally.

International experts Portigliatti Anthony and Benny Rodriguez bring an enviable portfolio and international recognition to the course. “In bringing these two renowned specialists on markets and careers to Brazil, we thought about the favorable economic times in which we find ourselves while keeping the focus on internationalization,” said Vera Marcia. ”Anthony is president and chancellor of FCU, with an impressive resume in the market. Benny Rodriguez is an expert on business strategy, persuasion, and neuro-linguistics,” Vera Marcia said. She said the two experts had worked with Anthony Robbins, renowned worldwide for excellence in training.

With the Brazilian market increasingly linked to the global economy, the manager who wants to advance their careers needs to have the skills and qualities in line with the increasingly sophisticated demands of the corporate world. ”The manager is in a position of leadership, requiring a level of ability and competence,” said president Sonia Gurgel. “Today, there are many managers and few leaders. The purpose of coaching is exactly this — to develop leadership skills in the organization.”

The considerations of the president of ABRH-PR raise the old question: Is it possible to learn to be a leader? “Yes. We all have the capacity to lead. Some have more developed characteristics within themselves while others take longer to learn them. The key is daily practice, focusing on the need for change and persistence,” said Gurgel.

The International Training and Coaching Certification will be held at the FESP headquarters in Curitiba, September 7 to 13.
