Governor and Mayor Initiate Curitiba Beltway Bidding
Mayor Luciano Ducci, Paraná governor Beto Richa, and the State Secretary of Urban Development, Cézar Silvestri, signed on Wednesday, March 2, a commitment of R$ 6.56 million, with funds from the Urban Development Fund (FDU), for initiating the bidding process for construction of the Curitiba Beltway.
“The Beltway will benefit thousands of motorists and city transit users. This is a project that guarantees safe and orderly transportation,” said Luciano Ducci. Of the total resources, R$4,393,389 will be funded by state government and the remaining R$2,171,053 will be funded by the City of Curitiba.
Governor Beto Richa said that the deployment of Curitiba Beltway is one more step the city is taking to prepare for the 2014 World Cup and the 2013 Confederations Cup. “It’ll be a great improvement for Curitiba and one more stage in the planning so that Curitiba becomes the best World Cup host city,” said the Governor.
The project includes asphalt resurfacing of the Curitiba Beltway feeder roads with earthmoving services; drainage with gravel bases and curbs; as well as landscaping, traffic signal and electronic highway sign infrastructure upgrades.
The Beltway will pass through eight neighborhoods – Rebouças, Alto da XV, Alto da Glória, Centro Cívico, Bom Retiro, Mercês, Batel and Água Verde. The construction will help relieve traffic downtown, enabling more fluid transit.
Construction will occur along Desembargador Motta Street between Sete de Setembro and Getúlio Vargas Avenues; Buenos Aires between Iguaçu Street and Brasílio Itiberê; Engenheiro Rebouças between Marechal Floriano Peixoto Street and Buenos Aires Street; and Brasílio Itiberê between Buenos Aires Street and Pref. Omar Sabbag Avenue.
Revitalization is planned along 25 kilometers of streets forming a ring or beltway around the center of Curitiba. The goal is to improve mobility and accessibility across the center of the city. Also traffic lights will be retrofitted and synchronized to improve traffic flow. The total investment in the revitalization activities will be R$36 million.
