Governor Orlando Pessuti and Mayor Luciano Ducci announced this Friday (Aug. 20) in the Brazil Room of City Hall, the bidding documents for the construction of the Beltway, a transit corridor to encircle the central urban region, designed to ease traffic flow and increase mobility in downtown Curitiba. The construction will be carried out using funds from City Hall and a loan from the State Fund for Urban Development (FDU), with a total budget of R$39 million. The first construction bid is for R$27 million.

“This project will improve urban mobility. We have invested a lot to improve the lives of the people of Curitiba, restoring and remodeling the streets, laying new asphalt, making fundamental improvements to Curitiba,” said Luciano Ducci.

“These are permanent improvements to Curitiba and will also leave the city in better shape to host the 2014 World Cup games,” said Governor Pessuto Orlando.

The Beltway project includes revitalizing streets, sidewalks and the improvement of traffic signals along a 25 km stretch of roadways that form a ring around the center of Curitiba. The goal is to improve mobility and accessibility throughout the central metro area.

The streets chosen for the Beltway will allow drivers to easily identify the route, most of which will have two lanes. Passing though eight districts including Rebouças, Alto da XV, Alto da Glória, Centro Civico, Bom Retiro, Merces, Batel and Agua Verde, the Beltway will help relieve traffic in the downtown area enabling safe and continuous travel. Drivers will be able to travel longer distances in less time and more smoothly.

Among the streets that will undergo construction are Desembargador Mota and Brigadeiro Franco in Batel, Brasílio Itiberê and Engenheiros Rebouças in Rebouças; Lysimaco Ferreira da Costa and the intersection of Teffé and Roberto Barrozo in Centro Cívico; Ubaldino do Amaral and Sete de Abril in Alto da XV, among others.

Municipal secretaries attended the ceremony, as well as the state Secretary of Urban Development, Bley Lipski Wilson, the president of IPPUC, Clever Adams, the president of City Hall, Jean-Claude Derosso, and chambermen Zeglin Tito, Mario Celso Cunha and João do Suco.
