Botanical Garden Commemorates “Pink”
The Botanical Garden received pink lighting to commemorate the International Month for Breast Cancer awareness as of 7p.m. on 1st October. Curitiba has joined the world’s principal capitals which, in October, illuminate landmarks to heighten public awareness of the importance of breast cancer prevention. This year, the Humanist Institute for Social Development (HUMSOL), in partnership with Curitiba City Hall, O Boticário and Femama (Brazilian Federation of Philanthropic Institutions in support of Breast Health) is participating in the lighting of the Botanical Garden’s conservatory and the affixation, on the Municipal Secretariat for Health, of a gable alluding to Pink October.
In 2009, as part of a global project, historic monuments like the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italy) and the Arc du Triomphe (France) are illuminated in pink. The Brazilian cities of São Paulo (Museum of Modern Art – MAM), Rio de Janeiro (Christ the Redeemer) and Porto Alegre (the Gasometer Works and the Piratini Palace) are also taking part, as is the JK Memorial in Brasília.
Pink October is a worldwide movement that started in 1977, in the cities of Yuba and Lodi, California (USA), aiming to publicise the breast cancer cause, raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of the disease. The movement consists of illuminating monuments, public places, streets, shop windows and other installations in pink to encourage society to discuss the importance of regular mammography, early diagnosis, suitable treatment and breast cancer rehabilitation.
