“Today is a special day because we have waited to be able to start these works for a long time.  They will break ground in late January 2011 and will bring great improvement to the quality of life of thousands of city residents”, said Luciano Ducci.  “With the Ring Road we will have the opportunity to improve urban mobility and revitalise the central region’s road surfaces, pavements and road signs. This work will have positive consequences for the 2014 World Cup”.

Meanwhile, the other public works will expand the city’s health care capacity.  “The lab will be the most modern in municipal public health services across the country, and the X-ray centres will optimise care in health units”, said the mayor of Curitiba.

Traffic

Work on the Ring Road will start in late January and will last eight months.  There will be four lots including the revitalisation of road surfaces and pavements and the modernisation of traffic lights along a 25 km network of streets that form a ring around the centre of Curitiba.  The goal is to improve mobility and accessibility throughout the central region.

Passing through eight neighbourhoods – Reboucas, Alto da XV, Alto da Gloria, Centro Civico, Bom Retiro, Merces, Batel and Agua Verde – the Ring Road will help relieve traffic in the central area with smoother and safer travel.

Motorists may have to travel further, but their journeys will take less time, and they will encounter better-flowing traffic. In the clockwise direction, the Ring Road will be 11.6 kilometres long, while in the anti-clockwise direction, 13 kilometres.

Among the roads that will undergo alterations are Desembargador Motta and Brigadeiro Franco, in Batel; Brasilio Itibere and Engenheiros Reboucas, in Reboucas; Lysimaco Ferreira da Costa e Teff[e / Roberto Barrozo, in Centro Cívico; and Ubaldino do Amaral e Sete de Abril, in Alto da XV.

Health

The Municipal Laboratory will cover an area of 3.9 thousand square metres and will take about 16 months to complete.  It will substitute the old building in Parolin and will boast the most modern equipment.  R$10.5 million will be invested in it.

The construction of four X-ray centres at the Municipal Centres for Medical Emergencies (CMUM) CIC, Cajuru, Boqueirao and Sitio Cercado will increase the offer of exams.  The forecast is that the work will be finished in six months.  These centres will permit the X-ray results to be sent on-line to the Exam Centre, which will, in turn, release the findings.

Parolin Health Unit will be rebuilt on its existing site, house 510 square metres, and should be ready in nine months.  This unit sees more than three thousand patients per month and serves an area of more than 17,000 inhabitants.  R$ 1.2 million has been set aside for it.

The signing of the approvals was witnessed by the municipal secretaries Mario Tookuni, of Public Works; Luiz Eduardo da Veiga Sebastiani, of Finances; Eliane Chomatas, of Health; Marcos Isfer, president of URBS S.A.; Clever de Almeida, president of Curitiba’s Research and City Planning Institute (IPPUC); the State Secretary for Urban Development, Wilson Bley Lipski; and Councilmen Mario Celso Cunha and Algaci Tulio.
