MDIC to Build Database of Engineers
To map the lack of workforce in sectors of strategic technology for the country, the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) will conduct a national census to assess the supply of engineering professionals in Brazil. The Department of Trade and Services of the Ministry is planning to initiate the process in June, in partnership with the Federal Council of Engineering, Architecture and Agronomy (CONFEA) and regional councils.
According to the MDIC, the intention is “to create an information database that will allow companies to find engineers for large infrastructural projects and the sub-salt oil extraction foreseen in the coming years.” Engineers will be called upon by federal and regional councils to answer a questionnaire about their undergraduate institution, year of graduation, work experience, and availability to return to work in the field if currently employed in other occupations. According to the Ministry, the survey should be extended in the future to all other regulated professions to help businesses and workers fill vacancies.
