This piece marks the beginning of a new venture for Curitiba in English. It is our wish to provide a separate English Exercise category of CIE for instruction in English as a Second Language. As all ESL teachers know, there are numerous ways to learn English, whether it be grammar exercises like these, or video chats on the Internet, or watching Hollywood movies. It is our intention to continue to provide such guidance to our readers who wish to improve their English.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR — BASIC

Lesson One — Verb To Be

In this first exercise we will be focusing on the most common English verb, To Be. It is the first verb students learn in English courses and is the equivalent of ser and estar in Portuguese. It is one of the only verbs in the English language that changes its form according to the pronoun being used like all Portuguese verbs do. In the present tense, To Be has 3 correct forms: am/is/are.

[Answers to the exercise are provided at the end.]

Complete the sentences with am, is or are. I did the first one for you.
